Deep gouge in a solid wood panel next to the bed. Repairable? Yes. Do hotel properties usually bother to make these repairs? No. Result: permanent damage to a freshly reomodeled room. 

Mini-fridge cabinet. Look closely at the damage: the veneered surface was gouged as the fridge was being installed! 

Mini-fridge cabinet damage is visible even when the door is closed. 

Veneer in a hotel elevator cab? Cardinal sin. Luggage trolleys, even with soft bumpers, will damage a veneer. TFL, 3DL, HPL or a combination would be a much wiser choice. 

Gorgeous wood veneer meets rolling, spinning office chair. Chair 1, veneer 0. 

Beautiful. Newly installed. Wrecked. An engineered surface would have performed better, and not wasted a precious tree. There's little doubt that every other room in this huge hotel looks the same. 

Who takes a fork to a veneered tabletop? Intentional or not, this kind of damage is depressingly easy to find even in premium properties. 

A bit austere, but a pretty deluxe room by European standards. 

Generous working space for the business traveler. But, is a rolling task chair on a laminate floor really a good idea? 

Once again, rolling, spinning chairs and hotel desks made from veneer are a terrible, wasteful, irresponsible combination. In this case, the ruined wood makes the whole room feel trashy (and overpriced!). Engineered surfaces offer all of the beauty, none of the guilt.
